College of Science

The College of Science is one of the main and oldest colleges of Civil Aviation University of China. The College focuses on connotation construction, sustainable development, and the application of science. In recent years, driven by the development of the civil aviation industry, the college has devoted itself to cultivating innovative talents who can meet the needs of civil aviation industry.

All the faculty members take talent training as the central task, make great efforts to promote the level of discipline construction, education and teaching, and scientific research, and improve the quality of talent training. The college has cultivated a large number of outstanding talents for the civil aviation enterprise and the society.

The College has four undergraduate programs: Information and Computing Science, Statistics, Materials Physics and Materials Chemistry, and two Master's programs in Mathematics and Material Science and Engineering.

The College has four departments: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Statistics. It has the following labs and research institutes: Mathematics and Statistics Comprehensive Laboratory, Materials Comprehensive Laboratory, Chemistry Comprehensive Laboratory and Analytical Testing Center, Applied Optics and Electrochemistry Laboratory, Institute of Materials Technology, Institute of Applied Mathematics, Institute of Aviation Chemistry, Institute of Low-dimensional Materials and Technology.

There are 132 full-time teachers, 103 of whom are Ph.D., among which 25 are professors and 47 are associate professors. Among the teaching staff, there are 2 "Famous Teachers" and one excellent teaching team awarded by the Tianjin Municipal Government, 6 awardees for teaching and scientific research at provincial and ministerial levels, and 12 innovative talents under the "131" program in Tianjin.

The two first-level disciplines (Mathematics, Material Science and Engineering) are the supporting disciplines for CAUC's application to confer doctoral degree. The first-level subjects of mathematics were selected as the key subjects by the Tianjin Municipal Government, and the first-level subjects of materials science and engineering were included in CAUC's aerospace subject group and the characteristic subject group of Tianjin Municipal Government.

Information and Computing Science and Material Physics are the pilot majors of comprehensive reform of CAUC specialties. The teaching team of algebraic courses has been awarded the "excellent teaching team" of Tianjin. The teaching team of Information and Computing Science and Material Physics was awarded the second prize teaching achievement at CAUC. The College has vigorously trained students' practical abilities, established many off-campus practice bases in well-known civil aviation enterprises and aviation enterprises, hired a large number of civil aviation experts from the industry as tutors, and guided students in their employment.

The College of Science has actively explored channels for international communication. It has launched a joint training program "Master of Materials Science and Engineering" with the University of Albi Mining in France, which has already jointly trained six students. The College has joined the "3+1+1" student exchange program between CAUC and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in the United States to train undergraduate and graduate students. Many experts from USA, France, Korea, Singapore and Israel came to the college for lectures. The college also offers basic courses such as Advanced Mathematics and General Physics in English for foreign students.

The College vigorously carries out teaching research and reform, and promotes curriculum and laboratory construction. Higher mathematics, general physics and linear algebra are the top-quality courses recognized by Tianjin Municipal Government. Mathematical analysis, higher algebra, probability theory and mathematical statistics, physical experiment, solid physics and material science are the top-quality courses recognized at CAUC. University Physics Experiment Center is the demonstration center of experimental teaching in Tianjin. In the National Mathematical Modeling Competition, more than 30 national first and second prizes were awarded to our students.

In recent years, the College has undertaken more than 50 national projects, more than 30 provincial and ministerial projects and other projects. Many achievements have been awarded at the provincial and ministerial levels. More than 300 academic papers have been published in SCI/EI journals in recent five years, and several papers have been highly cited by ESI and recognized by international peers.

During the 13th Five-Year plan period, the college will focus on strengthening the construction of disciplinary and professional platforms, adhering to coordinated and  open development, and constantly improve the quality of personnel training and innovation ability. As the cornerstone of personnel training and the pillar of discipline development of CAUC, College of Science will be a strong foundation to cultivate more innovative talents for civil aviation.

Undergraduate Programs

  • Information and Computing Science

Civil Aviation University of China is one of the earliest universities in China to set up information and computing science specialty. The specialty was prepared in 1999 and opened in 2000. So far, there are more than 800 graduates.

Information and Computing Science is a science specialty, which is based on information processing and scientific and engineering computing. It is created by the joining of information science, computing science, operations research and control science. This specialty trains applied and specialized persons with solid mathematical foundation and skilled computer skills, systematically grasp the basic theories, methods and skills of information processing and computing science, understands the basics of civil aviation operation and management, and receives preliminary training of scientific research, which can solve practical problems in information technology and scientific and engineering calculation.

  • Statistics

Courses: Mathematical Analysis, Advanced Algebra, Ordinary Differential Equations, Probability Theory, Mathematical Statistics, Applied Random Processes, Software Technology Foundation, Database Principle, Applied Regression Analysis, Multivariate Statistical Analysis, Sampling Survey, Experimental Design, Statistical Simulation, Data Mining, Big Data Technology Foundation, Civil Aviation Statistics, Air Transportation Economy, etc. The professional direction is statistical decision-making (Big Data in Air Industry).

Training objectives: To cultivate students with good mathematical and statistical knowledge, master the basic theory and methods of statistics, use computers to process and analyze data, and to engage in the development, application and management of statistical investigation, statistical information management, quantitative analysis, management decision support, etc. Bachelor of Science degree can be awarded in this major.

Employment Directions: Air Traffic Management, Airport Flow and Logistics Management and Control, Airline Operations and Management and Marketing, Civil Aviation Safety, Aircraft Maintenance and other departments or finance, insurance, medicine and other industries engaged in statistical investigation, data analysis, statistical prediction and decision-making and scientific research

  • Materials Physics

The Materials Physics Specialty was established in 2002 and is a pilot program for comprehensive reform specialty. The professional goal is to cultivate talents with wide knowledge through the study of materials, physics and chemistry.
The specialty has a multi-dimensional talent training system, which is based on science and specialized in engineering. Focusing on advanced materials research, testing and processing technology, we cultivate applied professional talents, who possess deep physical foundation, master basic theory of materials science and basic methods of modern materials engineering research and testing, and can engage in materials research and design, performance testing, production, technology development, quality management and application in the fields of science and technology, education and industry.
The professional experimental practice is supported by national and provincial level teaching, research laboratories and off-campus practice bases (well-known civil aviation enterprises). The professional core courses are mainly high-quality courses and characteristic courses, and all kinds of courses are adapted to the needs of civil aviation industry.
The students can participate in the process of scientific research through in-depth aircraft maintenance, equipment research and development, academic research and innovative entrepreneurship practice. So, the graduates are capable of non-destructive testing, surface engineering, material design and calculation, and new material preparation. They can go to scientific research institutes and universities for further studies. They can also go to enterprises and institutions, such as aircraft maintenance companies, airlines, aviation materials companies, airports; quality inspection, technical supervision, safety inspection and other departments to engage in production technology, quality management, technical management and development, etc.
